The land of the eastern Saxons, that is how Essex was named.
Found in the South East of England the
county covers an area of almost 1,500 square miles.
The main towns and cities of Essex are Chelmsford, the County Town and
administrative
centre, Colchester, known in Roman times as Camulodunum,
Harwich, Tilbury, Clacton and Southend-on-Sea.
Colchester was the earliest recorded Roman town in England and, despite
being destroyed by Boadicea and the Iceni tribes, remains a garrison town
to this day.
