The church building is under threat.
Every five years a
professional inspection and report is produced on the state of the church building and what repairs
need to be done. It will come as no surprise to those who visit the church that the roof requires
substantial repair, as do the tower and exterior walls. The church is damp and cold as the electrical
heating system is not safe to use.
The cost of all the work that needs to be done is £75,000.
The church has a fabric fund which can be used only for repairs and renovations. This stands
at about £8,500 and English Heritage has made a grant of £26,500.
A society, The Friends of
St. Nicholas Church, was formed in 2001 and later gained charity status. Its aims are to “provide
funds to maintain, repair, restore, preserve, improve, beautify and reconstruct for the benefit of
the public the fabric of the Church of St. Nicholas Fyfield, its monuments, fixtures, fittings,
furniture, stained glass, ornaments and other chattels in the Church and belonging to the Church”.
Membership of the Society is open to any person interested in its objects at an annual
subscription of £10.00.
Details of membership and information on funding applications can
be obtained from one of the officers of the Society:
